The growth of our turntable business and commitment to higher production levels means that we cannot continue both streams. The decision to leave the tonearm business was not taken lightly, especially as we have played a key role in the design and development of the world’s best tonearms. SME will exit the tonearm retail and OEM business with immediate effect shifting our focus on our core turntable and tonearm combination business. In an announcement by Chief Executive Officer Stuart McNeilis posted on the company’s website on Dec 3, SME said it will now concentrate on its core turntable and tonearm combination business. SME will also exit the OEM tonearm-making business. SME tonearms will now be available only with SME turntables as package deals. There will be no more SME tonearms for sale with immediate effect. SME engineers, recognising the potential of the latest complementary equipment, accepted the challenge to design and build a pick-up arm which unlike others in existence would make no detectable sound contribution of its own.
